Beaver Baseball "FAN"

Wow! The vocal minority has spoken! To all of you who have sent e-mails criticizing us for not doing "more" with the OSU Baseball team on our show, here is what I have told most of you in the return e-mails.

I said it on the air, and let me repeat this again. OSU Baseball is a nice story, a novelty so to speak, and is similar to the University of Portland Women's Soccer team. When they win or even play for a championship, we all get real excited. And we should.

But the other 48 weeks of the year, the majority of the people out there couldn't care less. You don't follow baseball recruiting, you don't check scores when they are playing on the road during February and March, and you really don't begin to pay attention until the regionals or super regionals.

Some history..... On our afternoon show, we try to be as local as possible for our 3-4 hours a day, but we can't be all things to all people. When we first changed from Ian and Amazon to Ian and Big Suke (and Dennis for awhile), I re-built the show to be as "local" as possible, since after nine previous hours of national sports radio, we needed a heavy local flavor. But... we can't be all things to all people. The masses here still would rather we talk Blazers, Ducks/Beavers FB, NFL, and then it trickles down from there. That doesn't mean we don't care about Beaver Baseball, we do. In fact, I think compared to most sports media around here, we were way ahead of the curve.
We had Pat Casey on our show, during Pac-10 Today segments, even before they advanced to the Super Regionals in 2005! We have had tons of Beaver baseball players on in the last year and a half. I actually wanted more this week, but unlike their football and basketball SID's, their baseball guy at OSU has not been very good at helping us getting interiews this week. We will try again today. I think our show and our station has done a pretty good job of covering the OSU Baseball story. We had reporters down at a lot of regular season games in Corvallis, and both the regionals and super regionals. We don't have someone at the CWS, but that is a management and budget decision not made by thos of us who are actually on the air. (go to www.1080thefan.com and click on "yell at Dennis" to vent about that if you like). But keep in mind, the fact that Dennis has gone to the trouble of airing the games this weekend (and it is a pain to juggle a weekend schedule that is for the most part computer driven) proves we all understand the importance of this.

But while we get criticized, I have to ask the question: "where is KEX in this whole thing?"
Beaver Nation, YOUR station wanted no part of airing any Beaver baseball games this season, even after last year's success. I gurantee you this: if 1080 The Fan were the Beaver flagship in Portland for Football and Baseball, you could be damn sure we would be carrying all of the big baseball games and doing a lot more than KEX is NOT doing. We wouldn't farm out the local broadcasts in Portland to a station that 85% of Beaver Nation in Portland can't hear.

Finally, the harsh reality. Beavers baseball is a great local sports story, but not on the same level of importance to the masses here as college football or even the Blazers. If they win, it will be very, very cool for OSU and the state as a whole. Same as UP Women's Soccer. If they don't, it was a great run, and people will be looking ahead to football season.

Have a great weekend, and don't forget the NBA Draft Party next Wednesday, June 28th, at The Hot Seat Bar and Grille (http://www.hotseatbarandgrill.com/index.html)
